House Majority Leader Rodolfo Fariñas has said he will support President Rodrigo Duterte if the chief executive decides to extend martial law in Mindanao.
"If the President requests Congress to extend his proclamation or suspension on the ground that the rebellion is still persisting and public safety requires it, I shall support him," Fariñas said in a statement on Friday.
"Pres. Duterte has shown that he is true to his oath to support and defend the Constitution, and our people continue to express their trust and confidence in him," he added.
A latest Social Weather Stations survey showed that Duterte got a record-high public satisfaction rating after his declaration of martial law in Mindanao, which had been upheld by the Supreme Court (SC).
Fariñas also said Congress and the SC have determined that Duterte's martial law declaration is proper.
"The imposition of Martial Law is an act of the Commander-in-Chief, subject to its revocation by the Congress and review by the SC of the sufficiency of its factual basis," he said.
The SC last Tuesday ruled in favor of the declaration, dismissing the consolidated oppositions filed by a group of opposition congressmen led by Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman, activists and militant lawmakers, and four women residents of Marawi City.
Meanwhile, the lawmaker urged the public to support Duterte's martial law declaration in the entire Mindanao after members of the ISIS-inspired Maute group attacked Marawi City.
"We should all support him, as well as the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Philippine National Police and all government authorities in alleviating the sufferings of our people in Mindanao," Fariñas said.
Duterte declared martial law in Mindanao following the Maute group's attack in Marawi City last May 23.
The declaration has a 60-day effectivity.
The military on Saturday said that more or less 80 members of the Maute group are still holed up in buildings within the city's business district.
